Before the service, two new members of the Order - Lord May of Oxford, chairman of the Royal Society, and Lord Rothschild, chairman of the National Heritage Lottery Memorial Fund - were invested by the Queen at Buckingham Palace. The Order of Merit, established in 1902 by King Edward VII, is one of the most prestigious British Orders of Chivalry and is awarded for exceptional service to the Crown or for the advancement of arts, learning, law and literature.
