BEIRUT, LEBANON - 1984/02/10: US Marines and Druze militia solidiers guard the evactuation of American, European and other foreign civilians who are being ferried by US military helicopters to ships off the coast of Beirut on their way to Cyprus. The evacuation of civilians, mostly diplomats and aid workers and their families followed increased fighting in Beirut between various militia factions followed by the takeover of West Beirut by Druze militia forces. Embroiled in a bitter civil war, the American forces became more and more involved in the fighting after 241 Marines were killed by a suicide truck bomb driven into their headquarters on the 23rd of October 1983. On a visit to the devastated Marine BLT building U.S. Vice President George H. W. Bush was quoted as saying, "We will not be cowed by terrorists", yet within months US forces who had arrived as part of a peacekeeping multinational force, withdrew from Lebanon with the country still very much at war..
