Queensberry Rules

Sir John Sholto Douglas Queensberry, 8th Marquis of Queensbury (1844 - 1900). A keen patron of boxing, he supervised the formulation of new rules to govern the sport in 1867, which came to be known as the 'Queensberry Rules' and included three minute rounds and the use of padded gloves. In 1895 he was tried and acquitted for publishing defamatory libel about Oscar Wilde which had led to Wilde's trial and imprisonment.
