Goods were conveyed to and from sea-going vessels on the River Thames in lighters and barges, loaded and unloaded by cranes from the waiting railway wagons. The GWR's traffic to the docks was hauled by North London Railway (NLR) locomotives. The crane was built by Beecroft Butler & Co of Kirkstall, Leeds, in 1852, the year the docks were constructed.
