The USS Bainbridge (background) approaches a berth as it arrives in the port of Mombasa on April 16, 2009. The US Navy vessel was escorting a US merchant ship unsuccesfully attacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean a day earlier. Also onboard was Captain Richard Phillips of the US merchant ship Maersk Alabama who was rescued after a dramatic intervention in his kidnapping by Navy sharpshooters aboard the Bainbridge.
