Red Cross Reports Growing Numbers Of Needy Across Europe
FALKENSEE, GERMANY - OCTOBER 15: Volunteers at the Falkenseer Tafel food bank, prepare groceries for the once-a-week food distribution on October 15, 2013 in Falkensee, Germany. The International Red Cross released a report last week claiming that the number of people across Europe who depend on food aid has risen sharply in the last three years, despite the region's growing recovery from the world financial crisis. A spokesman for the Falkenseer Tafel confirmed that the food bank serves aprroximately 50% more people than two to three years ago. The Falkenseer Tafel is part of a nation-wide network of food banks that collects groceries from supermarkets, butchers and bakeries to sell to low-income people for a small sum. A worker at the food bank said that the amount of food donated has gone down in recent years, as has the quality, because supermarkets are increasingly offering discounts on nearly-expired items.
