Crisis Deepens For The Internally Displaced At Democratic Republic Of Congo

GOMA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO - JUNE 24: Displaced people in Mugunga I say the final farewells before the truck takes them back to their home villages on June 24, 2014 in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. Twenty-three years of armed conflict and inter-ethnic violence in the Eastern Congo has left over 1.3 million people internally displaced, and despite additional humanitarian aids since the beginning of 2017, the situation continues to deteriorate with an average of 8,000 people per day being displaced. The DRC is known to have the highest number of internally displaced people in the world and while the Congolese government has taken measures to ensure their safety, its population face security problems with looting and women have reportedly been raped by the remnants of M23 or FDLR rebels who sneak into the IDP camps. The humanitarian crisis in DRC has not only been characterized by violent armed conflicts, but also by malnutrition and epidemic outbreaks as the crisis worsens and numbers continue to grow with an ongoing influx of people fleeing the conflict in South Sudan.
