Malcolm X speaks at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem on Feb. 1

UNITED STATES - FEBRUARY 15: Malcolm X speaks at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem on Feb. 15, 1965. Six days later, on Feb. 21, he was shot to death as he was about to speak in the same ballroom. Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Neb. in 1925, he learned about bigotry early when his house was burned down by the Ku Klux Klan. A troubled youth led to prison where, in 1946, Malcolm converted to the Black Muslin faith, later becoming a follower of the sect's leader, Elijah Muhammed, and changing his last name to "X." Malcolm was a vigorous, eloquent and often controversial advocate of equality for blacks. (Photo by Bill Quinn/NY Daily News Archive via Getty Images)
