Undated portrait of film actor Kirk Douglas. Douglas born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, made his Broadway debut in 1941, served in the US Navy and embarked on a screen career in 1946. His films include Champion (1949), The bad and the Beautiful (1952), Lust for Life (1956) for which he was nominated at the US Academy awards, and Spartacus (1960). From the 1970s Douglas also worked as director. Douglas won an honorary Oscar in 1996 for 50 years as a creative and moral force in the motion picture community.
