'Great March of Return' protests continue in Gaza

GAZA CITY, GAZA - NOVEMBER 16: Dozens of Palestinians were injured on Friday while taking part in ongoing rallies along the Gaza-Israel buffer zone, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. In a statement, ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra said that 40 demonstrators had been hurt -- including three in critical condition -- by Israeli troops deployed along the other side of the buffer zone. Protesters demand the right to return to their homes in historical Palestine, from which they were driven in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel. They also demand an end to Israel’s 12-year blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has gutted the coastal enclave’s economy and deprived its more than two million inhabitants of many basic commodities. Since the Gaza rallies began on March 30, more than 210 Palestinians have been martyred -- and thousands more injured -- by Israeli army gunfire and teargas.
