Schneeferner Glaciers On Verge Of Disappearing

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 08: A gondola takes visitors up to the Zugspitze plateau (Zugspitzplatt) that in the 19th century was still covered with 300 hectares of ice of the Plattachferner glacier on September 08, 2020 near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Today the Plattachferner is long gone, its remnants accounting for the much smaller Southern and Northern Scheeferner glaciers. According to a recent study by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), an association of scientists, the Northern Schneeferner will not last into the second half of this century while its neighbor, the smaller Southern Schneeferner, is likely to disappear completely within coming years.
