Historic radio telescope Arecibo collapses in Puerto Rico

CARIBBEAN ISLAND, PUERTO RICO - DECEMBER 02: A historic radio telescope collapsed on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico on Tuesday, the officials said. No injuries have been reported. The Arecibo Observatory, built-in in 1963, collapsed due to the failure of the support cables that have been going on since August, according to local media. In August, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the federal agency that owns the observatory ordered the controlled demolition of the structure due to the failure of its cables. Arecibo Observatory’s 900-ton receiver platform and the Gregorian dome fell onto the northern portion of the vast reflector dish more than 400 feet below after the main cables holding up the structures broke overnight. Arecibo was considered the world's largest until the 500-meter FAST telescope in China opened in 2016. The telescope, which played a key role in the defense of the planet, was performing the task of detecting and tracking asteroids approaching the Earth.(Footage by Pedro Alejandro Granadillo Hernanadez/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
