Typhoon Faxai Approaches

Typhoon Faxai is expected to make landfall on early September 9th, 2019. The Japan Meteorological Agency says it is "urging people to be vigilant because of concerns the typhoon could become a record-breaking storm. Strong winds and heavy rainfall could wreak havoc on the Tokyo metropolitan region." The agency says that as of midnight on September 9th, Faxai was bearing down on the Izu Oshima Islands. The typhoon is expected to make landfall in the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo. It's expected to maintain its intensity as it comes ashore. The region's transportation systems are preparing for the storm. More than 100 Shinkansen bullet trains between Tokyo and Osaka were suspended on Sunday. Both Central and East Japan Railway companies are planning to re-start Shinkansen service early morning on September 9th. Local lines in the greater Tokyo area are also being affected. East Japan Railway says its train services in the greater Tokyo area will start only after 8 a.m. on September 9th. Airlines in the Tokyo Metro region have cancelled more than 130 flights on September 9th and plan to cancel over 100 flights scheduled for September 10th. At the same time, evacuation advisories of level-four on a scale of five have been issued for about 50,000 households, comprising about 130,000 people, in parts of Kanagawa, Shizuoka and Tokyo prefectures.
