Algerian referendum

Algerian referendum; ***ALSO AVAILABLE AS FS080160021*** 6.5pm Stories FRANCE: Paris: GV Elysee Palace CMS Brian Connell i/c SOF - "This is the garden of the Elysee Palace, President De Gaulle's official residence in Paris. This weekend it is silent and deserted. The General is at his country home in Colombey les Duex Eglises, voting himself in the referendum which will tell him whether the French people back his plan for self determination in Algeria. What is he asking them to approve, a bill granting civil war torn Algeria the right to choose between some further association with France or complete independence. For two years with infinite patience and guile he has fought the right wing colonists, the army which he has brought under discipline again and the Algerian rebels themselves who win support for this plan. Public apathy is the chief danger but already people are turning out to vote in slightly larger numbers than they did two years ago. Even the referendum is on. Voting goes on until 5 o'clock province and 6 o'clock Paris and we should know the results shortly after midnight. People are certainly being encouraged to vote even if you have been left off the electoral roll all you have to do is to present some reasonable sign of identity, a hunting licence, a season ticket, even an outdate passport will do".
