Build-up to British vote; ITN New South Wales: Garrett towards with Snow CMS Garrett PAN to Snow Snow and Garrett along to sit at table next river Peter Garrett (Lead singer, "Midnight Oil") interview SOT - (lack of interest in debate because) Queen doesn't matter that much to anybody / doesn't feature as much in Australian life / would have expected to have our own head of state in course of time - way that campaign has been run haven't seen a connection to real issues / means that people cannot talk about it passionately or persuasively - country is independent is every possible way / just need to rectify constitutional anomaly of history and house of Windsor will gracefully depart - still some colonial overhang - Queen has been replaced by rich people and moviestars / constitutional change is something that people have got to understand fully before they vote on it - also people would like to be able to choose the President / don't want the Prime Minister of the day doing it - full stop at the end of chapter in history / won't feel anything but that it is a bit of our history which is ok - if we lose will come back to it and hopefully in a constructive fashion - by the 21st century Australia will be independent in every way other than name - comments on being chosen by young people as choice for President - would be flattered to run - don't know what is going to happen / yes vote will probably just squeak in / very hard to call CUTAWAYS Snow Sydney: i/c TX 28.10.99/C4N
