500 days to go, 50 pictograms unveiled for 2020 Olympics

Marking the 500-day countdown to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Tokyo organizing committee introduced 50 Olympic pictograms for 33 medal sports at an event in Tokyo on March 12, which will be a vital guide at the venues. Pictograms for the Olympics started with the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and each successive Olympics has created its own version, which overcome language barriers by conveying the sporting event without words. For the 2020 Olympics version, motion is added to each athlete's pictogram, which are based on the simple designs created for the 1964 Games. “I was thrilled with being able to participate in the history of Olympics," said Masaaki Hiromura, 64, a Tokyo graphic designer who was a member of the committee that designed the pictograms for the 2020 Games "I was able to make them in which we can be proud of as the country of origin that first made pictograms for the Games.” Advertising giant Dentsu Inc. won the contract for the design work, and about 10 members started developing the pictogram designs from June 2017. It took about two years for their completion, which were approved by the International Olympic Committee. The Opening Ceremony for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will start at 8 p.m. on July 24, 2020. From spring, applications will be accepted at an official committee website for the start of ticket sales by lottery. In June, test events to check on preparations for the Olympics will begin.
