Solar flares. Time-lapse Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) ultraviolet footage of a series of solar flares from a dynamic active region of the Sun. Many of these flares were associated with coronal mass ejections. The flares display as bright flashes, followed by spirals of magnetic field lines as the active region reorganizes itself. The SDO is an Earth-orbiting spacecraft launched in 2010 by NASA and used to observe the Sun. Here, the Sun is seen at a wavelength of 171 angstroms (extreme ultraviolet). This footage was obtained in the period 21-25 June 2015.
