Water drips from icicles which were formed as follows: 1) snow accumulates on the shady side of a sloped metal roof over an open pavilion; 2) daytime warming causes the snow to slide down the roof, with the soft overhanging snow turning to the vertical due to gravity, and vertical icicles form; 3) nighttime cooling stiffens the snow on the roof and the snow and icicles hanging from the roof; 4) daytime warming causes the snow on the roof to slide again, curving to the vertical as it leaves the roof; 5) the curving snow leaving the roof supports the stiffened snow that already left the roof and causes the overhanging snow to curve away from the vertical, going under the roof; 6) when meltwater runs down the sloped icicles, new ice forms at the tips and is more vertical.
