Young child with autism enjoys listening to her mom playing guitar for him. Music is often used as alternative therapy to calm individuals with special needs. --- This is our own son. He is our special super star. Thousands of images and videos featuring his cute face and magnificent blue eyes can be found anywhere from movie series to advertisements to blog posts. Non of these portrait him as a disabled boy, nor does it appear in the keywords. He is, however, diagnosed with autism and is severely disabled as he does not speak or understand any words or sign language, cannot walk and suffers from 150-200 daily "epilepsy-like" attacks. We have spent a substantial part of his life with him on the hospital. But all this is forgotten when the guitar is playing. Through the sound of the strings we have our special connection and fully enjoy each others company. Nothing like a guitar gets his attention and gives him comfort. So we just play a lot of guitar at home, and enjoy every second of it. Being a parent to disabled child, we strongly support the initiative of Getty Images to portray disability as a natural part of someone’s identity, instead of disability as something that needs to be overcome.
