Heartbreaking separation: Gaza-born triplets cut off from mother amid escalating conflict

JERUSALEM -AUGUST 27: Hanane Bayouk, a 26-year-old Palestinian, remains apart from her triplets due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Bayouk gave birth to her daughters—Najoua, Nour, and Najmeh—at Al-Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem on August 24, 2023, after a lengthy IVF process. Her travel permit expired before she could return to Gaza with her babies, forcing her to leave the hospital and relocate to a displacement camp in southern Gaza.The triplets, along with other premature babies born to Gaza mothers, have been unable to reunite with their mothers due to expired residency permits and the worsening conditions in Gaza following the conflict's escalation on October 7, 2023.Dr. Hatem Khammash of Makassed Hospital expressed concerns about the babies' emotional and developmental well-being due to their separation from their mothers. He highlighted the dangers of sending the babies back to Gaza, citing inadequate conditions and lack of medical care.UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell and other international representatives have visited the hospital and shown support, but no permanent solutions have been reached. Social services staff, including Nabila Qasim, are striving to maintain contact between the mothers and their babies through video calls, but acknowledge that no one can replace a mother's presence.The broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains dire, with over 16,500 of the 40,000 fatalities since October 7 being children. Additionally, about 17,000 children are now orphaned, and over 120,000 babies are in urgent need of milk and formula.
