"Macroscopic ventral view of female blacklegged, or deer tick, (Ixodes scapularis), about the size of a sesame seed displayed on laboratory light box. These ticks are responsible for the transmission of Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere and which can be deadly if not properly treated.The cream-colored oval-shaped structure near the center of its thorax is the genital plate. On either side of it are the spiracular plates or air holes. The bead-like structure near the rear end is the anus situated next to the horseshoe-shaped anal groove. Blacklegged ticks have saw-like mouthparts with dozens of barbs which make the ticks difficult to remove. Ticks belong to an order of arachnids and possess eight multi-segmented legs legs which are adapted for climbing and clinging."
