The Diaphragm

The diaphragm is dome-shaped, musculo-aponeurotic sheet, which is a partition wall between the thoracic and abdominal cavities, 1903. From 'Surgical Anatomy: The Treatise of the Human Anatomy and Its Applications to the Practice of Medicine and Surgery, Volume III' (1903). Its upper or thoracic surface is convex, and its lower or abdominal surface is concave. The diaphragm separates the thoracic cavity (heart, lungs & ribs) from the abdominal cavity and performs an important function in respiration: as the diaphragm contracts, the volume of the thoracic cavity increases and air is drawn into the lungs.
