Senator Schatz praises retiring Senator Durbin as dogged for fairness as fight for Dreamers continues

Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz says in floor remarks after Minority Whip Richard Durin announced his retirement from Congress in 2026 that Senator Durbin was as decent and principled as leaders come, dogged in his fight for fairness and justice but humble in sharing credit for his successes, willing to work with everyone but never compromising his values, picking difficult but worthy fights which he won time after time, paving the way for cleaner air on airplane flights, leading the fight against torture, lifting up voices often left behind in Washington, and as a trial attorney by training, never looking away from injustice as he worked to pass the Fair Sentencing Act and First Step Act and fought for Dreamers.
