Archbishop of York Visits Jamaica

2012 marks one of the most important years in Jamaica’s history, the 50th Anniversary of her Independence. To help launch celebrations, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr. John Sentamu visited the island from 21st – 31st January 2012. The Archbishop, a leading figure from the Church of England and his wife Margaret, spent a full week in Jamaica, which covered two Sundays enabling him to lead two services including an ecumenical service in Montego Bay and a special service at the Cathedral in Spanish Town. He and his wife will spent time meeting with the people of Jamaica, various charities, Ministers of the Church, selected leaders of the country including Jamaica’s Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, as well as enjoying the very best that Jamaica has to offer as a destination. In addition to this, the Archbishop visited Tivoli Gardens to see how the community and police worked together to create a positive way forward and reduce crime on the back of the Dudas Coke extradition in 2010. Following his appointment as Archbishop of York in 2005, Dr. John Sentamu became the second most senior clergyman in the Church of England, having a major influence on the way British society engages with faith issues. The Ugandan born minister has brought new life and energy to the Church with his spiritual zeal, and direct talking. (Footage by Endeavour TV/Getty Images)
