Olivier Vandecasteele was arrested on 24 February 2022 in Tehran and imprisoned in an Iranian prison. Olivier spent six years working for several NGOs in Iran, primarily involved in the reception of Afghan refugees. According to Iranian media, the Belgian is accused of several charges including espionage. He was recently sentenced to 40 years in prison and 74 lashes, according to the media. However, the Iranian authorities have never officially confirmed these reports. Recently, the Belgian authorities submitted a request to Iran to transfer Vandecasteele to Belgium.
