John W. Meyer testifies before a Senate Special Committee regarding his work at Hughes Aircraft Company
CU SOTs John W. Meyer, Publicity Director for Howard Hughes, banters with Sen. Homer Ferguson (off-camera) of the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program about Meyer's possible padding of bills, which he denies, and his salary / CU SOT Meyer: "we went to Harbor Lake, where the plane was being built, or rather tested up there. It was a dry lake in the interior of California. I will say about 100 miles from Los Angeles. While we were up there, in Colonel [Elliott] Roosevelt's mission was a Royal Air Force boy that had been quite well decorated. I think his name was Commander Stevenson, or squadron leader, or something. This chap, when he saw the plane inside the hangar, just about fainted. He said, 'I have never seen anything more magnificent that could do a better job.' This young kid and Colonel John Hoover, who was also associated with Elliott Roosevelt, just went into ecstasies about what a terrific plane it was. So it was obvious that the other planes they had seen did not compare with this plane, and that is the truth." Voice of Sen. Herbert O'Conor: "Did he seem to know what he was talking about?" Meyer: "He was enthusiastic about it. Certainly, because this kid, John Hoover, and Elliot Roosevelt were the first fellows to come back from the war with actual combat experience and knew what they were talking about, and the men sitting at Wright Field do not know a plane until they see one, until it has gone through the war." / CU Side view of Meyer listening / Note: exact day not known
