Mexican President unveils plans to support returning migrants

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - JAN. 22, 2025: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Wednesday that talks have commenced between Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente and U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, focusing on migration and security."It was a very good and cordial conversation," Sheinbaum stated during a press conference in Mexico city. "These conversations officially began yesterday, and it is very important for everyone to know this."Sheinbaum also provided updates on the establishment of care centers at the border to assist returning Mexican nationals."The attention centers at the border are already being installed. Yesterday, Secretary Marat was there, and today I have asked the Welfare Secretary to go and supervise," she said. She noted that the number of Mexicans arriving at the border had decreased compared to previous days.Addressing the government's support for returning citizens, Sheinbaum said:"We are going to support our brothers and sisters to come back. 'Mexico embraces you' is the program, and here in Mexico, you will always be welcomed with open arms."The president highlighted the ongoing efforts of Mexican consulates to assist nationals abroad."To protect our citizens, the consulates are fully operational. The foreign minister is dedicating most of his time to coordinating with consuls and a team that handles phone support, legal assistance, and aid for those deported or returning voluntarily," she explained.Trump signed decrees to secure the immediate expatriation of undocumented immigrants by reinstating the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), commonly known as the "Remain in Mexico" policy and declared a national emergency at the US southern border, after his inauguration on Monday.(Footage by Amaranta Atzin Marentes Orozco/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
